Please note that search engines are not intelligent. They cannot answer questions like "what were the causes of the civil war?" Like most search engines, the one on this site works on the basis of keywords. It will hunt through the site trying to match the word or phrase you enter in the form. It is not case-sensitive but can only match the words you enter. For best results, be specific in your search and careful with spelling.

If you enter "sir thomas fairfax" (quote marks not needed) and select the Exact phrase option, the search engine will return every page that contains the phrase "Sir Thomas Fairfax". If you select the Any word option, it will return all pages that contain any one of the words "sir" or "thomas" or "fairfax". If you select All words, it will return only the pages that contain "sir" and "thomas" and "fairfax" on the same page. You don't need to use any punctuation to separate words in the "Any word" and "All words" options; you don't need quote marks for the "Exact phrase" option. HTH
